How we verify
Forum threads go stale and booking sites may not say. We search each inn's official site for its tattoo rule. Where one is published, we copy the sentence that decides it, translate it and date it; where nothing is published, we record that too. Exceptions are labelled: a prefecture database, an operator's group-wide policy, or no official site found. Photos on this page show atmosphere or real notices from places that are not in our register.

Bath rules, FAQ, house rules and accommodation terms of each inn — not reviews, not hearsay. Where a rule exists, it can be in Japanese and several clicks deep.

The original Japanese sentence, untouched — then our English, clearly labelled as ours, never as the inn's.
当館でタトゥーに対して特に規制はございません。“We have no particular restrictions on tattoos.”

Every rule carries the day we checked it. Our first nationwide survey was dated 29 Sep 2026; every inn was re-checked on 11–12 Oct 2026. When an inn changes its wording, the page says so and keeps the newer wording.

A notice like this can be the first time a traveller learns the rule — at the bath entrance, after the room is paid for. We go to the inn's own site before you book instead.
Counts are the current register, as of 12 Oct 2026 (631 inns). The earlier survey of 29 Sep 2026 counted 634 listings. Today's register holds 631: two duplicate listings were merged, the October export had one listing fewer, and every inn was re-checked on 11–12 Oct 2026.
Published wording says guests with tattoos may use the shared bath — usually the inn's own site; where it is the operator's group-wide policy or a prefecture database, the inn's page says so.
Shared OK inns →Allowed in the shared bath only if the tattoo is covered — usually by a sticker, sometimes with a size limit. The exact limit is quoted on each inn's page.
Covered OK inns →Not in the shared bath, but the inn itself offers a private bath or the bath in your room. Confirmed in published wording — usually the inn's own; a group-wide policy is labelled on the inn's page.
Private only inns →The inn publishes no tattoo rule, but a private hot-spring bath (bookable, or in the room) is listed — usually on its official site; where the listing is elsewhere (a tourism site), the inn's page names it. It may provide an alternative — that is our inference, not something the inn has said; confirm before booking.
Private likely inns →The cited rule does not permit tattoos. Some name the shared bath, some the whole facility or stay, and some do not say which baths they cover — each stay page shows the scope.
Not allowed inns →The inn's own pages contradict each other, or the rule is only on a day-bathing page. We show what we found and re-check.
Needs check inns →The official site says nothing about tattoos. Silence is not a yes: we never count it as OK. Each of these pages has a Japanese message you can send the inn.
Says nothing inns →
