Group policies

For 29 stays in our register, the rule we cite is not a page written for that property but a group-wide page from its operator. We found 8 such policy pages from 7 operators. One page can decide the answer for many inns — but staff can still apply it differently, and some properties have no shared bath at all. Operator pages written for a single property count as that property's own rule and are not grouped here.

The short answer

For 29 stays in our register, the tattoo rule we cite is a group-wide page published by their operator, not a page written for that property. We found 8 group policy pages from 7 operators; the largest covers 12 stays in our register.

How a group rule works

Some hotel and ryokan operators publish one bathing rule for all their properties — in a group FAQ, a terms-of-use page or a PDF guide. When the page we cite states the rule for the whole group, we label it “Operator's group-wide rule”. When an operator's page is written for one property (its own URL, or wording such as “this hotel”), we treat it as that property's own rule and do not group it here.

Two things to watch. First, a group rule is general: staff at each property apply it, and several group rules keep a right to refuse. Second, not every property has the bath the rule talks about — 3 stays below have no shared hot-spring bath of their own, so check what the rule actually covers there.

Onsen towns

Every status above comes from what the inn (or, where labelled, its operator or a prefecture database) publishes. We checked these sources by 12 Oct 2026. Rules change: staff on the day have the last word.

“Private bath likely” is our inference from a published listing of a private bath, not the inn's statement. “Says nothing” means we found no rule — it does not mean OK. English translations are ours. How we verify · About
