Private onsen

35 inns we checked say no to tattoos in the shared bath but confirm a private bath for tattooed guests; 18 of those baths are hot-spring water and open now. At 243 more we found a private hot-spring bath listed but no tattoo rule — that “likely” is our inference, not the inn's word.

The short answer

35 inns we checked refuse tattoos in the shared bath but confirm a private bath for tattooed guests — 18 of them a hot-spring bath (in-room or bookable) that is open now; the other 17 use ordinary water or open later. At 243 more we found a private hot-spring bath listed but no tattoo rule: it may provide an alternative, but the inn has not stated a tattoo rule — that is our inference, not the inn's word. Confirm before booking.

Confirmed or likely: the difference

Private only means the inn itself (or its operator) wrote that tattooed guests may use a private bath. Private bath likely means a private hot-spring bath is listed (the stay page names where) but the inn has stated no tattoo rule — confirm before booking. Some inns print their ban on the private-bath page too (2 inns in our data).

Booking a private bath

  • Bookable baths may be first-come or reserved at check-in, and some charge a fee. The inn page quotes what the inn says.
  • In-room baths come with particular room types — book that room type, not just the inn.
  • Ask in writing if the inn states no tattoo rule: our private-bath message in Japanese.

Onsen towns

Every status above comes from what the inn (or, where labelled, its operator or a prefecture database) publishes. We checked these sources by 12 Oct 2026. Rules change: staff on the day have the last word.

“Private bath likely” is our inference from a published listing of a private bath, not the inn's statement. “Says nothing” means we found no rule — it does not mean OK. English translations are ours. How we verify · About
