Refused? Options

69 of the 631 inns we checked publish a rule that does not permit tattoos. A refusal is not the end of the trip: these are the other ways in that inns actually publish, with real examples.

The short answer

69 of the 631 inns we checked publish a rule that does not permit tattoos. The alternatives inns actually publish: 35 confirm a private bath (18 of them a hot-spring bath open now), 40 accept covered tattoos in the shared bath and 27 allow tattoos in the shared bath. At 244 more a private bath is listed without a rule.

  • Shared OK 30
  • Covered OK 40
  • Private only 35
  • Private likely 244
  • Not allowed 69

If you are turned away at the bath

Bath rules are the inn's call, and staff on the day apply them — so ask for an alternative rather than debate the rule. At 3 of the 69 inns with a no-tattoo rule, we found a private or in-room hot-spring bath listed; ask politely whether you may use it, in Japanese if you can.

MeaningI have a tattoo. I would like to use the private bath or the bath in my room instead of the large shared bath. Is that possible?

Option 1: a private bath the inn confirms

18 inns refuse the shared bath but confirm a private hot-spring bath for tattooed guests, open now. Across all 279 stays with a private or likely-private bath, we found 165 private hot-spring baths (reservable or first come) and 97 rooms with their own hot-spring bath. Private bath guide →

Option 2: a room with its own hot-spring bath

Book the room type, not just the inn. 97 stays in our register list rooms with a hot-spring bath; the towns with the most are below. At “private bath likely” stays the inn has not stated a tattoo rule, so ask first.

Options 3 to 5

  1. Cover the tattoo. 40 inns accept tattoos covered with stickers, some within a size or count limit. Sticker rules, inn by inn.
  2. Choose an inn that says yes. 27 inns with a shared bath on site publish that tattooed guests may use it. The full list.
  3. Ask before you book. 207 inns publish nothing — asking first avoids a surprise at the door. Japanese messages to copy.

Our register covers inns and hotels, not public bathhouses (sento) or day-use spas, so we make no claims about those.

Where a private bath will not help

4 inns in our data go further: the refusal also covers the private bath, or the inn says it may refuse the stay itself. Check the stay page before you book.

By town

Every town page shows which stays have a no-tattoo rule, which confirm a private bath and which say nothing — for example Kusatsu, Hakone and Kinosaki.

Onsen towns

Every status above comes from what the inn (or, where labelled, its operator or a prefecture database) publishes. We checked these sources by 12 Oct 2026. Rules change: staff on the day have the last word.

“Private bath likely” is our inference from a published listing of a private bath, not the inn's statement. “Says nothing” means we found no rule — it does not mean OK. English translations are ours. How we verify · About
