The ways in

Only 2 stays in our Tokyo list publish a way in. Read the exact wording — a group rule and a sticker rule are not the same as an open door.

Tokyo stays with a written way in (our translations)
StayStatusWhat the source says
HOSHINOYA TokyoTokyo · TokyoShared OKRespecting our guests' cultural backgrounds and values, we do not restrict use by guests with irezumi (traditional tattoos) or tattoos.Operator's group-wide rule
Onyado Nono Asakusa Natural Hot SpringTokyo · TokyoCovered OKIf it is small enough to be hidden with a sticker, you may bathe.

Also worth a look: Onsen Ryokan Yuen Shinjuku lists a private hot-spring bath that opens on a later date (the stay page has it); ONSEN RYOKAN YUEN Bettei Daita publishes conflicting statements, so we are re-checking.

Tokyo stays that say nothing

We cannot tell you why an inn stays silent. What we can say is what we found: 19 of the 25 official sites say nothing about tattoos. At 13 of those we found no private bath at all, and at 6 more the only private bath we found uses ordinary water, not hot-spring water. So for 19 of the 25 Tokyo stays in our register, there is neither a written rule nor a private hot-spring bath we could find.

If an onsen bath is the point of your stay, write first (Japanese messages to copy) — or plan a night outside the city.

Every status above comes from what the inn (or, where labelled, its operator or a prefecture database) publishes. We checked these sources by 12 Oct 2026. Rules change: staff on the day have the last word.

“Private bath likely” is our inference from a published listing of a private bath, not the inn's statement. “Says nothing” means we found no rule — it does not mean OK. English translations are ours. How we verify · About
